Founded in 1785, the University of Georgia is the nation's oldest state-chartered university. History and tradition have special emphasis in the life of the University. It is the second largest campus in the United States in land area, with over 35,000 acres state wide, and 33,000 in Athens and the surrounding county. With its strong academic majors, outstanding athletic programs, and extensive and varied campus life, the University attracts more than 33,000 students from every state in the nation and many foreign countries.
The University of Georgia is located in Athens, a pleasant college town with a population of 115,000 in the rolling hills of northeast Georgia, 65 miles northeast of Atlanta. Within a few hours drive of Athens are over a dozen parks and recreational areas, including Lake Lanier, Lake Hartwell, and the Appalacian Mountains.
